I let out a sigh, setting down the heavy cardboard box on the wooden floor. The attic was warm from the trapped afternoon glow falling in through the dirty window, wiping a bead of sweat with the back of my hand.

She passed away three days ago. I had never thought I’d be the one to take care of her belongings. Grandmother was quite...eccentric. As if the boxes upon boxes of old fairy tales weren’t evidence enough, she had found respite from reality in these fantasy worlds.

Now I had the honor of taking them to the donation center, 50 cent stickers callously slapped on their fading covers. I let out a sigh, sinking down next to one of the boxes. Is this all that life is? You accumulate belongings throughout the years only for a relative to go through them, deciding which baubles to keep and which to discard?

I shook my head. It’s too hot to be this philosophical. I bent over to pick the box up, it’s weight more than I had anticipated, toppling back to the floor.

I let out a pained sigh.

I began picking the books up and righted the box when a glimmer caught my eye. Opening one of the flaps to reveal a hand mirror. It was silver, flowing lines carved into the handle. It didn’t seem all that unique or special. I turned it around to see if the front was still intact but froze, mirror falling to the ground with a crunch!

I couldn’t see myself in the mirror.

“What...what just happened?”

“You’ve had your reflection stolen, my dear.”

I jumped at the voice, spinning around but saw no one. I must be losing it. The heat has surely gotten to me.

“Ahem! Down here!”

I froze at the voice once more, slowly lowering my eyes to see a petite person sitting on the top of the cardboard box.

“Waugh!” I yelled, falling backwards.

“No need to be afraid! If anything you’re the giant one here.”

“What-what are you?”

The little person was naked, green-tinted skin dewy in the dim lighting, two rabbit ear-like antenna atop their head.

“A fairy, of course!”

“A fairy? Don’t they have wings?”

The puffed out their cheeks in a childlike manner, crossing their arms, “Not all fairies have wings. And not everything that has wings is a fairy.”

“I don’t believe it.”

“I told you the truth”-

“Not that,” I clarified, “any of this! First there’s a mirror without any reflection and then a tiny person”-

“Fairy.”

“Fairy appears! Fairies aren’t real.”

“You have much to learn but no time to learn it. And the mirror does have a reflection, at least, now it does.”

“What?”

“I tried telling you before yes?”

I remembered, repeating the odd words, “A reflection has been stolen.”

“Ah-ah, not just any reflection. Yours.”

“Stole…? You’re not making any sense.”
